Here in the UAE we are definitely in the middle of the summer heat. It’s at this time of year that the residents vacate the city in search of cooler climates.
Ramadan also falls in July this year, right in the middle of the summer. As a result, the city really starts to slow down, the outside heat keeps everyone indoors and the shops and restaurants only open at night.
At this time of the year it’s a great opportunity to tune in with ourselves and see where in our lives we could also slow down.
In this vlog I share my 3 tips for slowing down, including the breathing exercise below.
Breathing Exercise to Slow Down:
This breathing exercise is very simple. Through my practice of yoga and meditation I have been introduced to so many different breathing exercises, this one can be challenging at first, especially if you’ve never done a breathing exercise before, but don’t give up!
What we do is simply bring our awareness to the breath and make it longer. If you are new to this then try to inhale for a count of four, and then exhale for another four counts.
So you inhale for 1, 2, 3, 4. Exhale for 1, 2, 3, 4. It’s supposed to feel a little bit challenging to breath for that long – so slow it down!
If you are more experienced with breathing exercises and yogic breathing then extend the breath for 6-8 counts.
You can do this exercise anytime and anywhere! To really enjoy the benefit of this breathing exercise continue it for at least three minutes.
